It was a mixed week for Selsey as they slipped up at home to Hailsham but romped to victory at Worthing United.

Sussex League division one

Selsey were without Rob Wimble, Matt Wood and Ross Woolf for the visit of Hailsham and slipped into the bottom four after a disappointing display.

The home side were reduced to ten men after 19 minutes when Jack Bingham was harshly sent off for a challenge on Hailsham defender Williams.

A caution would have sufficed but the referee thought it was dangerous and was quick to brandish the red card. Before that Graham Bush had a good chance at the far post but directed his header wide.

A re-shuffle saw Mark Lee come on and Selsey revert to a back three of Lee, Marc Hinshelwood and Tom Broadbent.

Hailsham looked to move the ball about and Leach and Kinseywent close.

Once Selsey settled, Bush should have given them the lead when he rounded keeper Jenner but his shot hit the post and rebounded to safety.

Another contentious decision brought the winning goal for Hailsham when after 42 minutes Bush was hacked down from behind only for the referee to wave play on. The ball broke to Hailsham left-back Ottley who fed Leach, who found space to shoot past Sam Joyce.

The second half saw Selsey try hard but there was no real quality and Hailsham defended comfortably. Leach and Stevens had chances to increase their lead but Joyce dealt with these.

It was a deserved victory against bottom club Worthing Utd.

Keeper Sam Joyce was not called upon to make a save all night.

Bush led the front line well on his own and the win was important following Saturday’s defeat.

The Blues were very pleased with a clean sheet. The side were missing Rob Wimble, Ross Woolf, Tom Broadbent and Marco Giambelardini.
