YM to take the game to Lewes in tonight’s Sussex Senior Cup clash

Peter Buckland says his Horsham YMCA side will look to go on the attack in tonight’s Sussex Senior Cup match despite being big underdogs against Lewes.

The match at Gorings Mead is definitely on with no need for a pitch inspection and kicks off at 7.30pm.

Garry Wilson’s Rooks currently sit ninth in the Ryman Premier table, 41 places higher than County League Division One side YM.

Lewes are expected to be near full strength but YM boss Buckland has promised that his side won’t be sitting back.

“We’ve been very much looking forward to the game for a few weeks now,” Buckland said. “In my programme notes for the last game I tempted fate but saying it could be the first time all season we go in fully stacked, and low and behold in the last hour I’ve lost Kev Burgess and Lee Wood with sickness. Lee might make the bench but Kev is in bed, which is a blow to the defence but that’s what we have a squad for.

“I watched Lewes against Harrow Borough on Saturday because our game was off but you can spend all your time worrying about what the opposition can do, and without any arrogance I want them to be worried about what we do.

“We go in knowing we have nothing to lose. If we lose the game 4-0 or if we give them a go and lose narrowly people will say ‘C’est la Vie’. But if we can get a result then we’re looking at the quarter finals of the Sussex Senior Cup.”

But Buckland warned: “I think they’ll come fully stacked because they’re mid-table in their league so can’t go up or down and are out of all the cups so they’ll be looking at the glory of a final at the Amex.

“They’ve got experienced former professionals in their side so we’re right up against it but everyone at the club is looking forward to it.”
