Phil Johnson and Sam Schaaf both hit two and Alex Gathern and Nick Sullivan were also on target for a YM side that had failed to score in their last two games.

It was, however, Peter Buckland’s side’s third clean sheet and he said: “It was just the game we needed. If you looked at it on paper, even with where we are, you would think YM would be going down there and winning.

“Two important things came out of it: it was a convincing win and we kept another clean sheet. Some big teams have gone there this year and only got narrow victories.

“I wasn’t too worried about the goals coming back as we have a goal scoring team. I am much happier and more confident about things and it’s no coincidence that players are coming back.”

YM took the lead on 16 minutes when Gathern’s cross was parried out to Johnson, who stroked the ball home from the edge of the box.

The lead was finally doubled on 35 minutes. Johnson drove forward, rode a challenge and poked the ball through to Schaaf after a one-two.

Johnson then pulled the ball back for Sullivan to tap home.

Four minutes later, Sullivan pouncing on a scuffed kick from the Hailsham keeper and touched it past him before teeing up Johnson.

A minute before half-time it was 4-0 as Johnson beat his man after a short corner and crossed for Gathern to finish at the far post.

YM added another on 77 minutes as Johnson’s shot came back off the post and Schaaf obliged with the rebound. Schaaf struck again six minutes left as he met a corner with a looping header which dropped into the net.
