Young Robins win title decider against old foes Chesworth

With the history between the two teams over the past few seasons this meant for a great finish to the season with Chesworth needing to win to be champions and Roffey needing a point.

Both teams defended well from the start but it was Chesworth who took the lead when a uncontested drop kick was knocked forward and a mistake at the back lead to the goal.

The second-half Roffey then went on the attack and forced Chesworth into their own half but some how the home side hung on and still looked dangerous themselves on the counter attack, Tom Baxter playing an important role in the Roffey goal.

With 15 minutes to go Roffey brought on Max Furber and Reece Church, and both made a impact straight away with Max scoring to make it 1-1.

With ten minutes to go the visitors brought on Ben Harrison to strengthen the back three and the Roffey boys kept possession well and were rewarded with the winner when James Pearse finished from close range to confirm Roffey Under-13s as champions.

It was cruel on Chesworth, who have enjoyed a fantastic season themselves. Manager Phil Talbot said: “It was typically close, frantic – there really is nothing between the teams.

“We were ten minutes from the title after taking the lead half way through the first half. Very disappointing, but the boys gave their all and were brilliant.”
