Barnham Trojans Red 2 Avisford Youth 1

Avisford gave A-division side Barnham an almighty fright in this Challenge Cup first-round encounter, turning in an incredible rearguard action before succumbing late on.

The black and whites got off to a bad start when Barnham took the lead after just two minutes. Oliver West latched on to a through ball on the edge of the area and unleashed an unstoppable low shot past the dive of Klaudiusz Piasecki.

But Avisford made a mockery of the three divisions between the two sides and began to make chances of their own – and one resulted in a deserved equailser.

A poor Barnham clearance found its way to Declan Griffiths, who shrugged off a strong challenge to fire the ball past the Trojans keeper.

The remainder of the half became a midfield battle. When Barnham did have opportunities to score, they found an Avisford body in the way time and again.

The second period became a tale of almost constant Barnham pressure. But every Trojans attack was repelled with a magnificent display of Avisford defending.

Ten minutes from the end, a relieved Barnham finally broke through when a cross from the right was met in the penalty area by Dillon Birch.

Avisford weren’t finished – Fin Brian and Griffiths had chances to equalise to ensure Barnham could not relax. But Trojans saw the game off to go through to round two.

AVISFORD: Piasecki, Jones, Nowak, Longley, Wasowski, Griffiths, Copeland, Brian, Hunter. Subs: Berry, Hall.

On a very wet afternoon, the squad conceded only one goal on their way to victory, beating Oakwood School in the final 1-0.

In the group stages, they beat Westbourne A 2-1, Brighton College 4-0 and then Westbourne C 5-0 in a convincing set of victories.

Coach and Prebendal teacher Jonathan Hodgson said: “It was a fantastic afternoon, despite the weather, and all the teams played very well. I am particularly proud of our squad who passed the ball with precision and their teamwork really paid off.”
