A 4-2 win at Crowborough on Saturday moved Saxons within a victory of securing a top half finish in South Hockey League Kent/Sussex - Regional 2.

On a very sunny day and sandy pitch, Saxons came out of the gates quickly and took the lead within minutes. A strong run by Alex Coombs ended with a flick over the goalkeeper’s shoulder from a narrow angle.

This woke Crowborough up and it didn’t take them to get back on terms. A short corner led to a shot being fired into the bottom corner past the outstretched Nate Webster in the away goal.

After Paddy Cornish picked up green and yellow cards, Saxons regained their composure and retook their lead. Andrew Acott rounded the goalkeeper and squared from a tight angle for young striker Bailey Wright to smash home his first goal for the first team.

This got Saxons going again and they manage to hold off the availing Crowborough attacks while really threatening at the other end with the impressive Wright growing in confidence.

Saxons mounted attack after attack at the start of the second half and finally broke through via a low flick from Olli Beal, continuing his red hot form in front of goal.

Crowborough pulled one back on the counter-attack with a good run and finish, but Saxons restored their two-goal cushion when Acott rounded several players, including the goalkeeper, on a run down the left before finishing from a tight angle.

Beal was denied another by a terrific goal-line clearance as Saxons completed the ‘double’ over Crowborough. Man of the match was goalkeeper Nate Webster.

Saxons: Webster, Taylor, Reed, Cload, C. Meredith, Cornish, J. Meredith, Acott, Wright, Coombs, Beale, Busbridge (c), Stainsby.

Saxons will take on third-from-bottom Horsham II in their final home game of the season this coming Saturday. Push-back at Horntye Park is 1.30pm.
