Gary Charman named permanent Horsham manager

The 32-year-old formerly accepted the role last night (Tuesday) having taken charge as interim boss against Sittingbourne on Saturday following the surprise resignation of Simon Colbran on Thursday of last week.

Charman becomes one of Horsham FC’s youngest ever managers and one of a very few to have been born and raised in the town.

He has played 558 games for the Hornets and scored 156 goals in a prolific career for his hometown club that has spanned 15 years.

Chairman Kevin Borrett said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Gary has accepted the role of manager.

“John Lines (CEO), Annie Raby (club secretary) and I will be working closely with him over the coming weeks and months to ensure his success in the role.

“This is a great step for the club, the town, and an example to all local youth footballers that dreams really do come true.”

It is Charman’s first full managerial role having been assistant to Colbran before his exit, and it is not yet known how the new position will affect his role as a player.

President Frank King, also a long-term servant of the club, expressed his delight. He said: “This is a historical moment for the club, and for me personally, one of my proudest.

“I’ve always hoped I would be around to see Gary as manager, and I am absolutely thrilled.”

Gary will be taking up the hot seat straight away, having trained with the team last night ready for his first game in charge against Folkestone Invicta FC at Gorings Mead on Saturday.

Horsham currently sit 18th in the Ryman South table.
