Giants live up to their name

BEXHILL GIANTS U18 73 SHOREHAM SHARKS U18 80BEXHILL Giants played some of their best basketball of the season in taking the current undefeated Sussex Youth Basketball League leaders, Shoreham Sharks to the wire in an exciting match at the Bexhill Leisure Centre on Friday.

The Sharks came into this game on the back of three straight wins and with their greater height advantage, were intent on imposing themselves on the Giants from the start.

But the Giants who had not played to their full potential in previous matches were not to be intimidated and their strong defence, excellently marshalled by Dave Mills, Luke Hunt and Mark Roby kept the Sharks scoring opportunities to a minimum.

The second quarter saw the teams trade baskets and Giants point guard Josh Mulvey found his range impressively scoring repeatedly from the key, a close first half ended with the Giants still leading 35-34.

The third quarter saw an impressive display by the Giants offence as they played an excellent controlled passing game which saw Douglin, Hunt, Mulvey and Robey take the game to the illustrious visitors and end the third quarter 58- 45 in front, shooting an impressive 90% of their shots made.

The Sharks who were looking at their first defeat of the season started the fourth quarter intent on keeping their unbeaten record intact, and played a tough defensive game forcing the Giants to turn the ball over repeatedly and make easy points against a tiring Giants team. The home side had given their all in front a large crowd and had no answer to the league favourites' impressive last quarter haul of 35 points to 15, with the Giants gallantly losing 73-80.
