Gold medals galore for swimmers

1066 SWIMMERS glittered gold in the sunshine at the Cranleigh Open on Sunday last week.

They won an impressive total of 10 golds, 12 silvers, 14 bronzes and a further 18 placings out of 84 swims. With the 35 personal bests they recorded, it turned out to be a day of triumph for the local swimming club.

Spearheading the gold rush was Emma Simpson with victories in the 50m, 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley (plus bronze in 50m butterfly). She was closely followed in the medal stakes by Laura Cannon, with golds in 50m and 200m breaststroke.

There were also golds for Megan Alsop in 50m butterfly, (plus a bronze in the 200m butterfly); Abigail Hucker in the 200m butterfly (bronze 200m individual medley); Emma Cannon 50m breaststroke (bronze 200m breaststroke); Hannah Ruddock 400m freestyle (two silvers in 200m freestyle and butterfly, plus bronze 200m backstroke); and Eloise Bryant 50m butterfly (three silvers in 50m and 200m backstroke and 200mindividual medley).

Hannah Bergin, who recorded four pbs, came away with three silvers - 50m and 200m breaststroke, 200m individual medley - and bronze in the 50m butterfly. Victoria Turner also won three silvers in 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 200 individual medley, and bronze in 200m backstroke; whilst Todd Alsop won silver in 50m breaststroke and bronze in 50m butterfly.

Peter Stell won three bronzes, in 50m and 200m backstroke plus 50m breaststroke, with Joseph Stell winning bronze in a pb time in the 50m breaststroke. Thomas Rhodes-Wilson gained bronze at 200m breaststroke, and to complete a great team effort, Grace Jenkins won bronze in a personnal best time in 400 freestyle.

Special mentions for Natalie Pollard, who recently joined 1066, and smashed her personnal bests in 50m breast and backstroke, and Megan Williams, who gained three pbs in 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke and 200m freestyle.
