Golf: Cowdray cabinet must be getting full...

A total of 13 clubs were represented by teams of four, with the best three scores to count. With three solid scores, Cowdray Park retained the trophy.

Cowdray’s three counting scores were Gordon Kendall (37), David Heard (35) and seniors’ captain Allen Sibley (34). Captain Roy Penrose’s score was the one discounted but this in no way diminishes his importance in captaining his team to yet another success in this tournament. Kendall also received a prize as one of the top individual scorers of the day.

Cowdray Park seniors, under stand-in match manager Dave Lucking, achieved a fine 7½-½ win at home against Bramley seniors.

After that, they travelled to the prestigious West Surrey course at Godalming, where they met a strong team in good form on their own course and received a dose of their own medicine - being beaten 7-1.

Match manager Keith Chapman and partner Ian Heustice found the big-hitting home pair of Clive Hoare and David Rogers too hot to handle and lost 3&2. A bigger defeat followed in match two before signs of improvement appeared with two very narrow defeats, both by the minimum amount of one hole.

In match five, John Smith and Cowdray’s man of the moment Graham Thompson overcame the strong home pairing of Bill Morris and Martin Dennison by 2&1 to give Cowdray their sole victory.

Hopes of a revival were shortlived when the home side won the final three matches - again two of them by the minimum margin of one up.

With four matches having gone to the wire, Cowdray could have made the result more respectable.

Cowdray ladies played in the Ping four ball betterball on a wet and windy day. The winners were Solveig Burton and Tessa Stockwell with 37 points, on countback from Debbie Cheasley and Mandy Lucking.

Sue Brown and Janice Leath were third with 36 points. Lil Cummins and Marilyn Davis scored 34, just beating Wendy Street and Jenny Clegg on countback.

The end-of-season presentations were made to the winners of the Surrey & West Sussex Winter League - Cowdray Park - at Bramley, preceded by a game involving representatives from all the competing clubs.

Title winners Cowdray Park’s representatives to collect the trophy were three of the match captains - David Balfour, Dave Hirons and Phil Harrison, with David Tilley deputising for the missing Terry Jasper.

Balfour is league chairman, while Phil Harrison has been secretary since the inception of the league and is a stalwart of the organisation, putting in many hours in ensuring the smooth running of the fixtures and the maintenance of records for the season.

CHICHESTER

Chichester ladies entered the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes and there was a good field.

Gill Fielding and Lisa Jackson won with a score of 35 points - they now qualify for the next stage later in the year.

Chichester ladies played the annual Brent Lodge Trophy - a Stableford competition which is always very well supported.

Thirty-six ladies took part a glorious day and in dry conditions, the ball was running well so a good score was expected.

The winner was Gill Fielding with 43 points, second was Jennifer Sherwood on 42 and third was Lisa Jackson on countback.

This trio are new to the club and have all had a playing handicap decrease.

Six ladies took part in the monthly medal on the Cathedral course and Maggie Brand won with a nett score of 76.

BOGNOR

Two medal competitions were held - the Hardwick Bowl for handicaps one to 11 and the Junior Cup for 12 and above.

There were 92 entrants for both competitions and the winner of the Hardwick Bowl was Dave Grover with a gross score of 73 (nett 64).

Second was club captain Don McLeod with the same scores and third Andy Frankling with gross 77, nett 65.

The Junior Cup was won by Joe Froud with a gross score of 78 (nett 63). Second was Andy Smith with gross 85 (nett 67), third David Carter with gross 84 (nett 69). Lowest gross was Norman Lee with 71 (nett 65).

Bognor seniors entertained Petersfield seniors and the match went down to the last game with Bognor running out 4½-3½ winners.

Bognor seniors played two away matches. They lost, although one was a very close encounter.

It was blowing a gale on the top of the Downs when they visited The Dyke. The valiant players battled the elements and defied the conditions to force their hosts into clinging on for a 4½-3½ win.

Bognor travelled to Waterlooville, again in difficult conditions, but found their hosts in a rich vein of form. Bognor were well and truly squashed 7-1.

Bognor juniors played for the Jon Penn Trophy, which has two categories - those with handicaps of zero to 18 and those who are 19-plus.

There are also prizes for closest-the-pins and longest drive. The day was well attended and all players had a great day.

In the 0-18 handicap section, the winner was Max Littleboy with 39 points. Second was Jake Stoneham with 38 and third James Woosley with 35.

In the 19-plus section, the winner was Katie Field with 42 points. Second was Sam Grover with 39, third Frazier Gamblin with 37.

Pins and drive prizes were won by Megan Tinson, Sam Grover, Jack Taylor and Marcus Embleton.

SELSEY

There were trophies galore at this month’s presentations.

The first was to the 2013 winner of the St Wilfrids Hospice Cup, Terry Chapman, who had a winning score of 38 points.

In second place were three players each with a score of 36 points - Jeff Wootton, Ray DeBuse and Gerry Holland.

St Wilfrids Hospice is the principal charity supported by Selsey’s veterans and the cup this year was presented by Lis Spence, a trustee of the hospice.

Veterans’ captain Graham Watson presented Lis with a cheque for £250 in recognition of the magnificent work carried out by the hospice on behalf of the community.

The second presentation was to the winner of the winter singles - also Terry Chapman - and the John Taylor Trophy was presented to Terry by veterans’ captain Graham Watson.

The final presentation was to the 2013 winner of the Ted Shurman Cup - a nine-hole competition for veterans playing off a handicap of 28 - won this year by Brian Ranier.
