Another week of philanthropic kindness from the Piltdown ladies

On Thursday, their usual ladies’ day, they charmingly invited a bunch of ageing gentlemen (aka the Tuesday Boys) to a mixed foursomes morning, followed by a delightful lunch. Three pairs had 41 points, which was a pretty good score over the seventeen holes available. After countback Pauline Burgess and James Fox were declared the winners, with Annie Orgill and Simon Dougall second and Jill Pardey and Bill Shelford third. Then they encouraged the Academy ladies by combining with them in a three-ball Texas Scramble, a thoroughly enjoyable event for all who played. The winning team were Karen Fleming, Annie Orgill and Stella Coppen.

On Sunday the partners/married pairs competition enjoyed fine weather, good company – and rather ordinary scores. An excellent lunch compensated: evidently the pork crackling was crisper than the golf.

On Friday the Annual Men’s Dinner occurred. Eighty-two men sat down in black ties and penguin suits to yet another triumph by the kitchen staff. This was followed by a bombardment of jokes (all very funny and mostly new), first by Simon Dougall the club Captain and then his guest Mike Farrell, a north country comedian of great skill.

Then on October 20th the Monday stableford produced a good turnout and respectable scoring. Collin Beesley won the yellow tee competition with 37 points and Peter Hayward (36) was runner-up. Tony Giles dominated the blue tees with 40 points, well clear of Malcolm Hunt’s 37.
