From a young age, Oli Turnill knew the golfing world was for him. After completing his GCSEs, the Bognor talent went on to study golf at college and then attended Darton College in the USA through a golf scholarship.

The college has a prestigious golfing reputation and Turnill was a successful member of their team, winning a national championship in 2007.

In 2008, he turned professional and became a member of established European golf tours. From this point, his achievements became ever more impressive.

Among numerous local championships, he has played at international level for the England boys’ team and spent two seasons on the England under-21 squad. He has also celebrated two professional wins.

Now at 27, Turnill’s main ambition is to become a European and US PGA Tour professional golfer.

John Cook, a respected coach, said: “In my opinion, Oli is equally as talented at his age as any I have taught and I would not be in the slightest bit surprised to see him challenging for major prizes on the professional tours before long.”

Turnill, who is based at Golf At Goodwood, is looking for sponsorship. There are various packages available. For more information, email [email protected]

COWDRAY PARK

Following two home victories, Cowdray Park seniors travelled to Hindhead to face the Stags on one of the toughest course they play.

The course is frequently used as a qualifying venue for The Open, and provides many idiosyncracies to test all aspects of a golfer’s game.

The first match out featured two Davids, Laver and Tilley, who combined to give Cowdray an encouraging start with a hard-fought 2&1 win. The combination of David Laver’s straight driving and David Tilley’s delicate touch around the greens proved too much for the home pair.

With the home side fielding a strong side, including two single-figure handicap players, it was not long before they asserted themselves and they had virtually unbridled success for the rest of the day, apart from a fine performance from John Durrell and Mick Folkes, who fought well to force a half.

However, the strength of the home side came to the surface as they ran out 6½-1½ winners.

Results (Cowdray names first): David Laver & David Tilley beat Andy Simms & Douglas Butler 2&1; Martin Brine & Keith Chapman lost to John Vart & Muir Richmond 5&4; Brian Carpenter & Graham Evans lost to Alan Snowball & Scott Nelson 3&2; John Stone & Bernie May lost to Graham Cribb & Steven Padmore 4&2; John Durrell & Mick Folkes halved with Mike Abbott & Jack Worth; Clive Brine & Mike Hughes lost to Terry Garland & Ron Killacky 4&3; Philip Singer & Wally Mitchell lost to Steve Burton & Mike Nicholls 2 dn; Ken Newberry & Gary Strowbridge lost to John Vardon & Colin Hirons 3&2.

The Cowdray course really bared its teeth for the seniors’ monthly Stableford, with the thick rough and slick greens proving a real test for the unwary golfer.

Scoring was lower than could have been expected under such excellent weather conditions. First man out Mel Milburn set a scorching pace with 39 points, giving little indication of the problems out on the course and eventually gaining him seocnd place.

Playing alongside Milburn was division-one player Mike Burgess, who returned with a good score of 35 points and second place in his division. Milburn’s score was quickly equalled by the consistent Brian Carpenter.

David Gaff was the next division-one player in to record a reasonable score – 34 points – to earn third place in that section.

The eventual division-one winner, for the third time this season, was Harvey Terry with 36 points.

Halfway through the day, eventual winner Bruce Spooner came in with 39 points to win on countback and continue his summer renaissance.

The raffle raised £177 for Prostate Cancer Research.

Results: Div 1 – Harvey Terry 36; Mike Burgess 35; David Gaff, Gordon Kendall, Peter Burton, John Doran, Jan de Vries, Paul Owen, all 34. Div 2 – Bruce Spooner, Mel Milburn, Brian Carpenter, all 39; Ian Goodall 37; Dave Darby 35; Graham Sutton; John Kitchener; John Durrell; Tony Castley; Alan Robinson; Peter McIlwraith, all 34.

Cowdray ladies played a two-ball Texas scramble. This unusual format worked well and it was a fun competition.
