The Ifield Golf Club player is enjoying a good first season as a senior (over-55) as he recently also won the Sussex seniors title at Highwoods.

He followed that up at Aberdovey Golf Club with a one-under par 69 to win the Welsh title by two shots.

He said: “My success is due to the hard work put in over the last 12 months under the guidance of Ifield’s head professional Jon Earl.”

Jones scored a two-over par 72 in an opening round disrupted by delays for fog and heavy rain to leave him four shots behind the early leader, Keith Stimpson of Wenvoe Castle.

As the weather improved, Jones scored two under par 68 in his second round to give himself a one-shot lead.

In the final round, Jones played the first nine holes in one over par which increased his lead to three as the pressure told on his pursuers, however a dramatic three-under par back nine by Welsh international Nigel Evans turned up the heat on Jones.

He responded well with eight solid pars and an eagle to finish with a one under par 69 and a two-shot winning margin.

Jones won the Sussex seniors title at Bexhill in glorious sunshine, but with a tricky wind.

In the morning, he shot a one-under par 69 to lead by three shots. A gross 72 in the afternoon for a total of 141 gave Jones a seven-shot winning margin over Mark Logan and defending champion, Paul Plant.

The Senior Open victory leaves Jones second in the Welsh seniors rankings and with a good chance of being selected to represent Wales in the home internationals in September.
