The Highwoods talent won the title in exceptional circumstances last year when torrential rain played havoc with the schedule. The matchplay event was changed to a strokeplay competition, which Carberry won by three shots. She also went on to win the South Region Women’s Championship.

This year’s mid-amateur reverts to the normal format, with the full field playing 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying on the first day tomorrow (Thursday). The leading 32 players will qualify for the matchplay knockout, which ends with the final on Sunday. The event is open to players aged 18 and over.

Chelsea Masters, also from Highwoods, will be offered a taste of Tour life next month at the WPGA International Challenge on the Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS).

Invitations to play in the event will go to the top 20 players on the England Golf women’s order of merit, sponsored by Lorrin Golf. They will play in an international field which will include Alison Nicholas, Europe’s winning captain at the 2011 Solheim Cup and a past US Open champion.

The Challenge, which is the only LETAS event to be played in the UK, is supported by England Golf and will take place at Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf and Spa, on the Suffolk/Essex border, from September 26-28. Masters came tied 36th in the English Women’s Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Mannings Heath GC last week.
