Evans finds form in Canaries

Golf star Ben Evans enjoyed a superb weekend to record his best finish of the European Challenge Tour season.

The Staplecross-based professional was 10-under-par for his final two rounds to come tied 14th in the Fred Olsen Challenge de Espana in the Canary Islands.

Evans began the four-round event on Thursday, last week, with three birdies in his first six holes, but required another gain on the 17th just to finish with a level par 71.

He followed that with a two-under 69 a day later to make the halfway cut on the mark and that was thanks to a couple of birdies in the last four holes.

Evans - who had missed the cut in his previous two Challenge Tour events - really started to find his form on Saturday, carding seven birdies en route to a four-under 67.

The 25-year-old then fired four birdies and an eagle in a bogey-free closing 65 on Sunday to climb a further 21 places and finish with a 12-under-par total of 272.

Evans moves up from 122nd to 87th on the Challenge Tour Rankings with the top 20 at the end of the year graduating to the full European Tour for 2013.

A member of Rye and Sedlescombe Golf Clubs, Evans is now in his fifth season on the European Challenge Tour having previously been one of the sport’s top amateurs.
