Evans qualifies for season finale

Ben Evans has booked his place in the season-ending event on golf’s European Challenge Tour for the first time.

Staplecross-based Evans, coming to the end of his third year as a professional, is in the field for the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final in Puglia, Italy.

The 72-hole event, which gets under way on Wednesday and finishes on Saturday, is open to only the leading 45 players on the Challenge Tour Rankings.

Evans, a member of Rye and Sedlescombe Golf Clubs, snuck in at 43rd thanks largely to a trio of top 10 finishes and a pair of top 20 placings despite missing the cut in his last three outings.

His latest appearance was at the Egyptian Open last weekend where European Ryder Cup star and world no.9 Rory McIlroy, who Evans knows from their amateur days, finished tied 12th.

The top 20 on the rankings after the Grand Final will earn cards for the 2011 European Tour and those placed 16-45 will be guaranteed spots in the final stage of the Qualifying School in Spain during December.
