Evans rallies well to make cut

Ben Evans produced a fine recovery to make the cut in the latest European Challenge Tour event.

The Staplecross-based professional looked set to have the weekend off after beginning the Barclays Kenya Open with a five-over-par round of 76.

Evans was going along well enough at one-under-par after two birdies in his first 10 holes, but four bogeys and a double in his last eight sent him plummeting down the leaderboard.

But he rallied with a splendid second round 68 featuring a four-under-par last 10 holes, including a birdie on his last, to make it through to the final two rounds on the mark at two-over-par.

Evans began the third round with 12 straight pars before eventually signing for a 73 and a closing 76 left him tied 63rd on a nine-over-par total of 293 at Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi.

“Things to work on before next event. But feeling happy with my long game. Still very rusty with the short game,” Evans wrote on his Twitter page after the event.

The 25-year-old member of Rye and Sedlescombe Golf Clubs is 59th on the Challenge Tour Rankings. The next event on the schedule is the Allianz Open Cotes d’Armor Bretagne in France from May 10-13.
