Golf: Christmas is a time for giving (prizes)

The weather was a little inclement but the course was in good condition, although the greens are starting to slow down a bit.

The winner wasBobby Moore, second Terry Chapman and third Mike Russell, who were presented their prizes by veterans’ captain David Winter.

Denny Terry was presented with a trophy by the veterans’ captain for winning the winter singles 2014-15.

The veterans held their annual meeting and final presentations day for 2015.

Many bottles of Christmas cheer were given out and the captain presented a cheque for £844.49 to his chosen charity.

The presentation was made to Jill Sturdey, who chairs the Selsey and District Carers’ Support Group. She thanked the captain and members for raising such a good sum of money.

The hardy members will continue to play throughout the winter but they all look forward to next year and playing some golf in the sunshine.

CHICHESTER

A Chichester golfer will have no excuse for missing his next tee-time after winning a limited-edition BOSS watch for achieving a hole-in-one.

David Wren, 67, scored his ace on the 124-yard, par-three 15th at Chichester GC, and the 16-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.

The luxury German brand has once again pledged to reward club golfers with an exclusive watch for every hole-in-one recorded during a club competition in 2015, after giving away more than £1.5m-worth of limited-edition timepieces since its launch in 2013.

The scheme is open to any golfer whose club uses HowDidiDo - a free-to-use, web-based social network for golfers - and anybody playing in official club competitions is eligible. Currently, more than 1,800 clubs use the website.

In addition to the limited-edition watch, Wren joins more than 10,000 members in the BOSS Watches H1Club which offers access to exclusive benefits and merchandise.

COWDRAY PARK

Cowdray Park seniors held their annual Christmas dinner and prize-giving to honour the winners of various competitions during the year.

Two special guests were invited along to present trophies named in memory of their husbands, Wendy Yellowlees and Helen Chapman, accompanied by her son Ken, also a member of the club.

After an excellent traditional Christmas meal, the members joined in a rumbustious rendition of Christmas carols, with musical backing from David Laver and Gordon Kendall. Retiring captain Sam Howes made the presentations to the prizewinners.

Howes revealed his year as Captain had raised £4,750 for Dreams Come True, thanks to the generosity of the seniors’ section, despite the loss of two competitions to bad weather.

He presented a cheque to Sarah Beechcroft-Kay from the Charity and she expressed her thanks for such a marvellous amount. A further £100 was donated by a member, after the presentation, to boost the sum to £4,850.

Cowdray Park’s monthly medal was notable for the performance of Scott Evans. He posted the day’s best score – a stunning 63 (seven under par), while delivering his third medal success of the year.

During 2015, his ‘annus mirabilis’ (marvellous year), Evans has reduced his handicap from 14 to seven by virtue of excellent golf throughout the year.

The runners-up in division one, five shots off the leader, were Kevin Raishbrook and Shaun White on 68, with Matt Hill also beating par on 69.

Two members of the seniors’ section returned good scores of 71 – seniors’ medal winner John Doran, off his new handicap of seven, and Dave Hirons.

In division two, Richard Smith beat Justin Thorpe on countback with 68, followed by Ken Kyle, Shaun Keel and Ken Chapman on 69.

The nearest score to Evans came in division three from Kevin Clue with 66. Second place went to John Donald with 67, while Wayne Challen continued his resurgence with 68. Denis Stillwell again rolled back the years with a par-equalling 70, alongside club chairman Terry Adsett.

Cowdray ladies played a best nine hole competition on a sunny and showery day. It was a Stableford played over 18 holes, with the best nine holes selected.

Results: 1 Myrna Heustice 24pts; 2 Jenny Nicholls 21; 3 Judy Stillwell 21; 4 Marilyn Davis 21; 5 Jenny Clegg 21; 6 Jill Parry 20.

BOGNOR

Bognor Golf Club’s Sainsburys roll-up group had their traditional Christmas dinner, with some poor karoke singing to follow.

Rob Walker won the day’s competition. Winner of the 2015 Sainsbury’s aggregate roll-up competition was Roger Leverton for the third year in a row.

In second place was John Harnett; third Ian Simpson. Thanks went to Ian Simpson for organising the day and for running the group three times a week every week of the year.

Thanks also went to Cliff Willis for administering the Sainsbury’s yearly roll-up aggregate competition.
