Golfers drive into county final

Cooden Beach Golf Club advanced into the final of the Gilbert Print Plate after coming through a dramatic contest yesterday (Monday).

The Cooden Sea Road club booked its place by getting the better of The Nevill at Chartham Park GC in a competition otherwise known as the Sussex county over-55 foursomes matchplay inter-club knockout.

The semi-final finished all-square at two matches apiece so it was left to the Cooden duo of Peter Bradshaw and Bernie Dyer to perform their now familiar play-off role having already secured two ‘extra hole’ victories in previous matches.

With their opponents having made the fairway, Dyer was unfortunate to see his tee shot find sand. Playing their second shot, The Nevill cleared the water hazard in front of the first green only to see their ball land in a greenside bunker.

Bradshaw then played a magnificent 120-yard nine-iron bunker shot to within 15 feet. The Nevill were unable to get up and down from the bunker and a solid two putt from the Cooden pair secured victory.

Earlier Bradshaw and Dyer had won their match by two holes, while the new pairing of Martin Dix and Bryan Bringloe finally triumphed 2&1 after always being ahead in their match.

However, the pairings of Martin Thompson and Len Arnot-Perret, and David Relf and Colin Springett were unable to secure the half point required for an outright team win.

Chartham Park will provide the opposition in the final at The Dyke Golf Club on Monday September 17. Park were 4-0 winners over Foxbridge in the other last four tie at The Nevill.
