Golfers drive into national quarters

The Kent Street-based club continued its best ever run in the prestigious competition with a 3-2 victory at home to Leatherhead GC in round eight.

Mick Anthony maintained his great run of form with a 5&4 win over three-handicapper Dave Thompson, carding three birdies and only two bogeys to give Sedlescombe the first point of the day.

Paul Davis, one of Sedlescombe’s most improved players this year with a handicap that has come down from 11 to eight, gained the second point courtesy of a two up victory against Andy Norme.

Ray Smith, who is still unbeaten in this matchplay format, produced another fine 4&3 success against Mervyn Wynyard. Smith is just so steady and handles the pressure very well.

Sedlescombe team captain Alan Macdonald was unlucky to lose one down to Nick Taylor, a very consistent five-handicapper, as Leatherhead gained their first point.

Paul Lawrence played Leatherhead captain Simon Rose in the last match not knowing that Sedlescombe already had three points. Rose had a run of four pars to win two up and secure Leatherhead’s second point of the day.

Sedlescombe will join Burnley, Chester-le-Street, Farthingstone, Immingham, Kintore, Millbrook and St Enodoc in the quarter-finals at Marriott Worsley Park on September 23 and 24.
