Marilyn gets her teeth into top golf role

But come the morning, the former dental nurse was able to get her teeth into things nicely as she was greeted with a rendition of You’re A Pink Toothbrush with the lyrics adapted to suit the occasion.

Starting her year on a high note with dry, bright conditions, she and almost 100 other golfers enjoyed a lovely day’s golf playing a new format of aces high in teams of four. With the help of her family, cakes and drinks were provided for everyone.

The generosity of all the players raised more than £1,000 for the incoming captain’s charity, Macmillan’s Midhurst branch.

For the ladies’ October medal, although conditions were favourable, they found it difficult to score well – apart from new member Brenda Rees, who came in with an amazing nett 67, reducing her handicap to 21.

Cowdray Park seniors began their end-of-season fun events with a Texas scramble featuring teams of four drawn from all areas of the handicaps by competitions secretary Bill Hummerston to ensure all teams were of a similar level.

Although there was heavy rain the day before, the sunshine returned, with most players in short sleeves and some even wearing shorts.

Early leaders, with a good score of 62.4, were Dave Hirons, Mel Milburn, Tony Castley and Dennis Clifton, courtesy of three birdies and two pars on the final six holes.

It was some time before that was surpassed by Allen Sibley, Graham Thompson, Phill Morris and John Wyatt returning a score of 61.3.

The winning team returned to the clubhouse with a superb winning score of 58.2. The successful team comprised Terry Adsett, Champions Trophy winner Peter Burton, Alan Robinson and Chris Yeardsley.

LITTLEHAMPTON

Sixty players took part in the junior captain’s day as new captain Charlie Parsons took over the reins from Connor McCartain.

In the individual event over the links course, George Fenneymore had the best Stableford score, a superb 42 points, one ahead of runner-up Joshua McCartain, with Oliver Hemsley third on 40.

The team event, with the best two scores counting in the team of four format, was won by Oliver Hemsley, Kevin Staight, Lee Passey and Alan Coombs with 97 points, three clear of the field.

Club captain Mike King presented trophies won throughout the year and thanked organisers George Godden and the club pro Stuart Fallow for their hard work with the juniors during the year.

“There was an excellent turnout of juniors and adults and to see a full clubhouse with our juniors sharing the day alongside parents and club members is very satisfying and gives much hope for the future,” commented King.

The 2014 winners were: Junior Club Championship – Jake Stoneham; Couchman Memorial Trophy – George Fenneymore; David Leadbetter Jug – George Hines; Watts Cup – Joshua McCartain.

Local juniors keen to improve their golf are welcome to attend regular Saturday coaching sessions at the club each week, run by pro golfer Carl Rota, from 10am to 11.30am. The cost is £3 a session – for further details contact Carl on 07758 871466.

BOGNOR

After the hugely successful winter four-ball supper evening, a shotgun four-ball better-ball competition was held the following morning.

Winners were Gary Embleton and Ian Hendry with 42 points, second on countback were Simon Watts and Rob Brown and third were Ron Stevens and Mark Watson with 41.

Bognor seniors have now finished their summer season, with a respectable 17 wins and five halves out of 36 games played. The only home loss was late on in the season to Ham Manor, with notable doubles over Worthing and Singing Hills.

The first winter-season game is on November 10 against Waterlooville.

CHICHESTER

There was a debut for the Chichester veterans on the Tower course as 64 players played in a new competition for the Autumn Trophy, donated by captain Campbell Goldsmid, who stood down on the day.

Golfing conditions were excellent and the scoring was very good on this slightly easier course.

The captain made a great attempt to win his own trophy – he recorded 41 points but this was beaten, first by Chris Penny and Bill Penn, who scored 42, and then by the eventual winner playing in the last group, recent recruit David Wren, who scored a magnificent 43 points.

All agreed it was a pleasant way to complete the season of competitions.

The traditional captain’s drive-in Stableford took place in misty, wet weather and new captain Bev Shrives-Wrist struck the ball forcibly down the middle – just the right distance for Dave Monkton to win the bottle of champagne.

A sum of £100 was raised for the captain’s charity.

A tremendous turnout of 64 players started and despite atrocious weather, most finished. Many struggled but four people broke par and top of the pile was Richard Holden with a magnificent 40 points.
