Marvellous Movember efforts seen at Bognor Golf Club

Additional shots were given for natural growth, stick-ons and falsies. Most sported some sort of top-lip decoration, be it home-grown or purchased, and some extravagant designs were on show.

This second event, a team waltz, brought another 96 entrants, all striving for top score on the day and overall team success. Again there were several visiting teams with players from Horsham, Worthing, Lee-on-the-Solent, Littlehampton and Chichester – fantastic support for a day at thois time of year. The weather was sort of kind as the rain held off but the wind blew and ended the hopes of many a team.

Several teams seemed unaffected by the consitions and The Hairy Boys (John Cable, Chris Lovell, Paul Cooper and Phil Hawkes) had a very solid 84 points to pinch second place on countback from the ever-consistent Hair Suit – Charles Mackendrick, Rob Kissell and a brace of Riseboroughs.

But fittingly, the winners by four on 88 points were the fully-bearded team JJ’s, Andy Isitt, Ian Paine, Ian Bright and the man himself, JJ Stephenson.

Deducting these scores from the Movember part one results gave the overall winner with the lowest score.

JJ’s leapfrogged many teams with their massive score to achieve -24.9 to grab second place, but the consistency over the two events saw overall victory secured by Hair Suit with a fantastic -26.6.

The raffle was wonderfully supported. Many members who were unable to play donated their entry fee to the cause and some great arm-twisting saw past captain Ron Stevens raise £80 in sponsorship for his tache.

Thanks went to all the helpers.

Adding in the £640 from the first leg, organisers said more than £1,600 in total would be sent to Prostate Cancer UK.

COWDRAY PARK

Finally getting some decent weather for a competition, Cowdray Park seniors held their annual Triple Six, which involves playing six holes of three different formats – foursomes, greensomes and better-ball, playing in pairs to give the players a different challenge.

There was an air of poignancy about the day, as this was the final competition in which the late Keith Chapman participated, and won in conjunction with John Lee, before he had to stop playing golf.

This year’s winners, with 40 points, were Paul Owen and Mike Holden, ahead a cluster of pairs on 39 points.

Cowdray Park seniors held their inaugural medal event for the Keith Chapman Trophy to honour the memory of the long-serving senior who died in October.

The trophy was donated by Keith’s widow Helen and this was also the first competition in the new Eclectic year.

The weather was reasonable, dry and blustery with the greens still slow and providing many conundrums for the players, while those going into the wet rough around the green found it a little muddy to say the least.

This was the final competition under the reign of captain Sam Howes, and he led the way early on with an acceptable score of 71 on the board, but it was not long before he was swamped by the younger seniors, who seemed to revel in the conditions.

Paul Owen set the benchmark with a 67, off eight handicap, alongside a re-vitalised Bernie May and Brian Carpenter, but they were passed by Colin West and John Kitchener on 66.

Gary Strowbridge claimed second place with an excellent score of 65, proving yet again that he can often play better than his handicap, as this was his third second place of the year. He was denied by a stunning score of 64 from John Doran, another off an eight handicap, marking this first playing of this competition with a suitably good score.

His round consisted of two birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys in what must be the finest first round by a senior in an eclectic event. This completed a memorable double for Doran as he had won the club’s monthly medal in November, and both he and Paul Owen have had their handicaps reduced to seven.

Another player who made a good start to his eclectic year was Nick Austin who also scored two birdies. Only four twos were recorded – by Phil Harrison, Graham Evans, Terry Adsett and Gary Strowbridge.

The raffle raised £150 for Dreams Come True and at the forthcoming Christmas dinner/prizegiving, captain Sam Howes will reveal how much was raised during the year for this charity.

Leading scores: 64 John Doran; 65 Gary Strowbridge; 66 Colin West and John Kitchener; 67 Paul Owen, Bernie May and Brian Carpenter; nine other players at par or better.

Cowdray Park’s Bernard Manning Trophy (Texas Scramble), was won by Kevin White, Scott Evans, Nick Sampson and Andy Morgan, with a stunning total of 54.9 points.

This was no surprise as White scored a hole-in-one on the 17th and Evans achieved a two on the 11th, giving them a good number of points on just two holes. This was a mixed blessing for White as the clubhouse was full of his colleagues waiting to celebrate his achievement.

Cowdray ladies played a turkey trot with a difference. The format was a Stableford with double points given on the par fives.

The winner with an amazing 45 points was Jill Parry.

Cowdray ladies and gents played in the Christmas mixed competition in very breezy but mild conditions. The competition is organised every year by the ladies’ section.

This is a drawn competition with the pairing made up of one lady and one gentleman playing a greensome Stableford format. The game was given a festive spirit by the mulled wine and mince pies provided on the course.

Results: 1 Ian Heustice and Pat White 44pts; 2 Chris Hutchings and Judith Brownlee 39; 3 Phil Harrison and Myrna Heustice 39; 4 John Sexton and Helen Chapman 38.

CHICHESTER

A Chichester golfer will have no excuse for missing his next tee-time after winning a limited-edition BOSS watch for achieving a hole-in-one.

David Wren, 67, scored his ace on the 124-yard, par-three 15th at Chichester GC, and the 16-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.

The luxury German brand has once again pledged to reward club golfers with an exclusive watch for every hole-in-one recorded during a club competition in 2015, after giving away more than £1.5m-worth of limited-edition timepieces since its launch in 2013.

The scheme is open to any golfer whose club uses HowDidiDo - a free-to-use, web-based social network for golfers - and anybody playing in official club competitions is eligible. Currently, more than 1,800 clubs use the website.
