McGrath recovers from poor start in style in Mannings stableford

Even the disappointment of three ‘blobs’ on his card could not deny Chris McGrath victory in Mannings Heath’s Saturday stableford.

Playing off 12, McGrath chalked-up nine pars and three birdies on the remaining holes to post 42 points in Division One, beating Brett Norris by a point despite the latter carding a birdie two on each of the three par threes. Roger Bridge took the Division Two honours with an excellent 43 points to leave John Gleaves trailing by a shot.

Sunday saw 11-handicap Kevin Swales lead Division One with nothing worse than a five on his card, while in Division 2 Nigel King just pipped Geoff Lodge on countback. The Ladies found the soft conditions harder to cope with and Lynne Jones’s 31 points was enough to win the Silver Division by a shot from Lyn Turner. Best of the Bronze scorers was Marion Gibson.

Heath’s seniors meanwhile notched a home win over the CLAWS winter league leaders for the second week running with Wildwood the scalp this time. Heath now lie second behind Slinfold who regained top spot.

In the Seniors’ Texas Scramble both top teams were round in two under par 70s but Phil Davies, John Wills, Dennis Bews and John Aldridge had the higher combined handicap.
