Nessling, of Cooden Beach Golf Club with a coaching attachment to Sedlescombe Golf Club, has booked his place in Final Qualifying after coming through Regional Qualifying.

The Hastings-based player claimed one of the coveted top eight places in Regional Qualifying at Hankley Common yesterday (Monday) after finishing in a four-way tie for fifth.

Nessling carded a one-under-par 70 to finish alongside amateur Benjamin Taylor (Walton Heath), Jack Harrison (Wildwood) and Sam Cutting (Berkhamstead). Three players were two-under and the winner, Jamie Rutherford (Knebworth), was four-under.

More than 110 players, including some from Austria, Bermuda, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa and Sweden, teed off at the Farnham course.

In all more than 1,300 players took part in Regional Qualifying at 13 venues across the UK, including several other local players.

At Wildernesse GC in Sevenoaks, Colton Alleyne-Davis (James Andrews School of Golf) finished tied 31st with a four-over-par 76, James Cunliffe (Sedlescombe), Ben Nash (Cooden Beach) and Mathew Andrews (Highwoods) were tied 40th with 77s, and Edward Richardson (Rye) was tied 54th with a 78.

There will be 72 competitors at each of the four Final Qualifying courses - Gailes Links, Hillside, Royal Cinque Ports and Woburn - next Tuesday with 12 of the 288 earning places in the Open itself at St Andrews, Scotland, from July 16-19.
