Slinfold look for Daily Mail success

Slinfold Golf Club are plotting another long run in the prestigious Daily Mail Foursomes competition.

Having seen partners Karen Ashford and Cathy Downey win through ten rounds to reach the national finals in both of the last two years, the torch has been passed to Beckie Mabbutt and Rosie Jarrett this year.

And the new pairing have made an encouraging start, winning their first matches to reach the Third Round.

The duo won their first round comfortably away at local rivals Wildwood three weeks ago to set up Sunday’s contest with West Chiltington.

In a far tougher match the Slinfold pair found themselves one down after nine holes. A strong fight-back over the back nine saw them pull all square before Beckie sank a four-foot putt on the 18th to secure a +2 win and ease Slinfold into the third round.

More than 1,500 clubs nationwide enter the Daily Mail Foursomes, and both Beckie and Rosie, a comparative newcomer to golf, will be desperate to emulate the club’s previous pair by making it all the way to the finals.

Elsewhere at the club the Men’s Medal took place on Sunday. Best of the day was Bertie Chambers and Jonny Elliott, both carding 78s. The Division One winners was Jeff Jones, with Francessco Da Re second and Chambers third.

Division Two was won by Don Peacock, Dave Gellibrand second and Joe Sillet third. Mark Tuppen, David Howells and Nicholas Sparling took the top three places in Division Three.

In the Senior Stableford, Michael Fitzpartick’s remarkable 45 points saw him snatch first place from Peter Boon (44). Tim Bloxham was third.

Slinfold GC is again hosting the 2013 New Horizons Appeal Golf Challenge and Auction Lunch in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice. It takes place on Friday July 5, and last year raised more than £6,000.
