Tom, 16 triumphs in President’s Cup in Mannings Heath’s Spring Meeting

Rounds of 69 and 79 earned sixteen year-old Tom Thurloway the President’s Cup in Mannings Heath’s Spring Meeting at the weekend beating Andy Main and Ali Crunden by three shots.

Thurloway’s three-under-par round off the medal tees on Saturday was a masterpiece of consistency with a birdie, an eagle but not a single dropped shot despite playing the closing holes in torrential rain. Nearest challenger Aaron Peacock was five shots adrift on 74 with Crunden and Richard Burton both on 76.

A strong, blustery wind added to Sunday’s challenge off the gold tees and threatened to blow Thurloway’s chances away after he drove into the trees on the seventh and ran up a calamitous quadruple bogey. After ten holes his lead over Peacock had slimmed to just one shot but he showed admirable composure to complete the remaining holes in one under par while Peacock dropped five shots in three holes to finish with a disappointing 82.

It was Main who claimed the runners-up spot, his best-of-the-day 73 just giving him the countback verdict over junior captain Crunden whose impressive 75 was only tarnished by a nine on the sixth.
