Alice Barnes, 22, playing off a handicap of one, came through a thrilling semi-final on Sunday morning to beat Pyecombe’s Aileen Greenfield on the 20th hole.

The other semi-final was a re-match of last year’s final between 2013 champion Karen Sykes (Worthing) and Emma Carberry (Highwoods) which took five extra holes, before Carberry won the match on the 23rd.

Six rounds of golf over three days took their toll, and it was the greater consistency of Barnes that saw her clinch the title of county champion, beating Carberry 6&4.

The plate final saw Daisy Kane (West Sussex) beat a previous junior county champion Jelina Fernando (Pyecombe).

The prize winners in the 36-hole strokeplay competition were Katherine Russell (Royal Ashdown Forest), who retained the Langridge Salver for the fourth year running, for best scratch score of 155 for the over-50s.

Daisy Wakelin (East Sussex National) won the Stobart Cup with the best scratch score of 149, and the Grant-White Cup for best handicap score with a net 143.

As is tradition after the championship, the county team for 2014 was announced by captain Sue Todd. The team are in action this week against Surrey, Hampshire, Kent and Middlesex.
