Beauport Park duo Colton Alleyne-Davis and Paul Nessling both progressed from the East Sussex National qualifier thanks to scores of 74 and 72 respectively, while Highwoods’ James Doswell advanced from the Little Aston qualifier with a 70.

With 12 qualifying places up for grabs at East Sussex National, Nessling came tied fourth and Alleyne-Davis scraped through after finishing in a four-way tie for ninth. Nessling, in fact, was four-under-par standing on the 16th tee before dropping four shots over the tough final three holes.

Doswell was tied sixth of the 17 qualifiers from his venue, one of 16 around the UK being used for regional qualifying. He, Nessling and Alleyne-Davis will go on to contest local final qualifying on Tuesday July 2 at four courses in Scotland, namely Dunbar, Gullane No1, The Musselburgh and North Berwick.

Should any of the threesome make it through that stage, they would tee it up alongside the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy in golf’s biggest tournament, with a prize fund of £5m, in mid-July.

Several other local players were in the field at East Sussex National. Ben Nash (Cooden Beach) just missed out after carding a 76, Michael Farrier-Twist shot a 77, Camber Sands-based Liam Harper (Homelands Ashford) had a 78, Luke Cornford (Cooden Beach) went round in 80, and Highwoods duo David Monkhouse and Mathew Andrews signed for an 82.
