Trio of new captains installed at Mannings Heath

Three new captains drove themselves into office at Mannings Heath.

Chris McGrath is the new club captain while Richard Lotinga and Ewan Duff have taken charge of the seniors and juniors.

The trio hope to emulate the good work of their predecessors in helping the club thrive despite current restrictionsc.

The club staged a pairs Texas scramble on Saturday and there was a bumper entry with the top three teams all carding nett 62.5 after deducting a quarter of their combined handicaps.

Winners on countback were two-handicap Aaron Peacock and 16-handicap Mick Sheridan who finished five under par gross.

Harpal Burji and Chris Witter were runners-up with Neil Russell and Richard Wild third.

The juniors staged their first match for a year as they travelled to Godalming for a friendly with West Surrey and lost 3-2, Freddie Muggeridge and Tom Packham their winners.

Sunday’s Stableford was won in impressive style by Greg Laming.

Playing off 12 he carded 11 pars and a birdie for 41 points. Beau Grady was second with 38 and Kevin Dixon was third on countback from Cam Bates and Keith Marshall on 36.

Earlier, the ladies staged two Stablefords, both won by 20-handicap Lynne Jones.

Her 35 points on the Waterfall featured four pars as she beat Meriel Jolley by a point.

Two days later, over nine holes on a soft Kingfisher course, she pipped Rosemary Williams on countback, both carding 12.

The seniors wrapped up their season with a bogey competition, with Andy Bone firing a brilliant nett 62 off 17 to finish nine up against the course.

That put him level with Mark Barrett in the Order of Merit but Barrett claimed the trophy for having three wins to Bone’s one.

Stuart Mead came second on the day with +7; Alan Houliston third with +6.

It was the last event of Paul Trueman’s senior captaincy.

He presided over 22 competitions and helped raise £2531 for the Phoenix Stroke Club of Horsham.
