Wicks on course for junior golf major

Talented teenager David Wicks is on his way to a tournament regarded as junior golf’s major.

The ex-William Parker Sports College student now taking his A Levels at Bexhill College romped to victory in the East Sussex National Golf Club Junior Open.

The event was a qualifier for the Abu Dhabi Junior Golf Championship and this victory leaves Wicks lying third in the rankings.

The top 15 advance to the prestigious competition - now in its 25th year - to be played on November 22-24. Former winners include Justin Rose and Andrew Coltart.

The 17-year-old took East Sussex National by storm on Tuesday and after birdies on the first five holes he was seven under at the 13th and heading for a course record.

The testing last few holes checked his progress slightly and he finished four under - seven shots clear of the second placed player. Wicks, who plays off scratch, is a member of Sedlescombe and Highwoods Golf Clubs.
