Worthing golfer Bill is still above par aged 92

WORTHING golfer Bill Burrows recently recorded a remarkable achievement when he won a club competition aged 92.

The feat has left members at his club, Worthing Golf Club, wondering if he is the oldest golfer to win a competition.

He won the club’s Wednesday Fourball event with playing partner, Richard Culling, and said: “I turned 92 on August 20 and won the Wednesday Fourball four days later and the club have made a big song about it as they felt it was something that should be mentioned.”

Burrows plays two to three times a week off his 24-handicap and won the fourball betterball competition with 18-handicapper Culling after they scored 41 points.

Burrows, who is widowed after being married to Dorothy for 62 years, added: “I was drawn with Richard and we moulded together pretty well. We both hit a birdie and got two or three three-pointers and we both got a four-pointer.”

As well as golf, he also bowls for Worthing Pavilion, and plays a bit of snooker.

He was brought up in Lincoln and joined the Territorial Army in 1939.

He later travelled around England and Scotland on reserved occupation – installing cooling systems and testing Hurricane plane engines – before he moved to Worthing in 1947 and spent time working overseas in the oil industry, although still played football for Worthing Old Boys, as well as a bit of cricket.

The Bill Burrows Wednesday Fourball tournament has been named after him at Worthing, where he has been a regular member for the last 30-plus years, and he still loves going out to play sport.

He has hit seven hole-in-ones during his golfing career and said: “I play golf two or three times a week and play bowls three or four times a week, which isn’t bad for my age – I can’t let grass grow under my feet, I like to keep fit.

“I just go out to enjoy my golf. Occasionally, I have a really good day, sometimes an off day and sometimes an average day. I just take it as it comes, although I’ve lost a lot of distance after I injured a shoulder.

“I do everything for fun now, though. I’m grateful to be playing.

“I just play to keep fit, don’t take any medicines or pills and I’m just going to keep going for as long as I can.”

Burrows has one daughter, Jackie, five grand-children and three great grand-children and had one son, Terry.
