GOLFERS FALL AT FINAL HURDLE

WORTHING'S hopes of winning the Davies & Tate for the fifth time evaporated in Saturday's sunshine at Cowdray Park. In what proved to be a one-horse race final, Haywards Heath had an emphatic 10-2 victory to lift the trophy for the first time.

Their dominance was such that all Worthing had to show for their efforts was one win in the foursomes and two halved matches in the singles.

Keith Hale and Steve Godley's 4 & 3 win against James Miller and Ben Arnold prevented a whitewash in the foursomes. But at lunch Worthing team manager Eric Reekie was still confident that Worthing could come from behind.

Reekie obviously had last month's semi-final against Copthorne in mind. But this time Haywards Heath kept Worthing firmly on the back foot as they capitalised on their morning success. David Fluke and Alan Laverty were the only Worthing players to avoid defeat.
