Good away wins for rugby clubs

Hastings & Bexhill and Rye chalked up notable away league victories against former bogie sides on Saturday.

H&B continued their fine second half of the season in Kent One with a 37-10 victory over Whitstable, while Rye won 26-24 against Holbrook in Sussex One.

Although Paul Sandeman dived over from a lineout and later kicked a penalty, H&B found themselves 10-8 down at one stage before a further Sandeman penalty and Mark Piotrowski’s converted try put them 18-10 ahead at half time.

Two second half tries from Dillon Newell, the second of which was converted by Sandeman, put H&B further in front and Ben Campbell, pictured, put the icing on the cake with a late score under the posts which was also converted.

Rye, meanwhile, overturned a 24-12 deficit to boost their hopes of a top half finish. Jay Rutledge and Ben Short scored tries, and Matt Cooke kicked a conversion as Rye trailed 14-12 at half time.

After falling further behind, a Chris Challinor try and Cooke conversion brought Rye back to 24-19 adrift. A second Rutledge try brought Rye level and Dylan Morris kicked the winning conversion with three minutes left.
