Good but not good enough for Gray

Adrian Gray made a decent but ultimately unsuccessful stab at qualifying for the 2012 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

The St Leonards thrower won three matches in the PDPA World Championship Qualifier yesterday (Monday) afternoon before his hopes were ended by the eventual winner.

Gray chalked up 5-2 victories over 2008 UK Open runner-up Gary Mawson, Mark Jodrill and Mark Frost in the preliminary, first and second rounds respectively at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan.

But his run was halted by a 5-3 loss to Arron Monk in the last 16. Monk, the 2011 PDC Under-21 World Champion, went on to book his place in the first round proper, while runner-up Joe Cullen earned a spot in the preliminary round.

Gray suffered first round exits in the two Players Championship events at the same venue over the weekend, losing 6-1 to Shaun Griffiths on Saturday before being edged out 6-5 by the seeded Nigel Heydon on Sunday.
