Goodwood delight at Three Friday Nights success - plus tips for tonight

GOODWOOD’S Gordon Enclosure might have been one of the places to be last Friday night – but the Gorgon Enclosure was where it was really all happening.

Gorgon City took over the decks as the winner’s enclosure and parade ring was transformed into a giant dancefloor for the second of this year’s Three Friday Nights.

The 90-minute set featured live vocals, stunning lights and lasers – and the most almighty downpour anyone there could ever remember.

Somehow the deluge only added to the electric atmosphere as the drenched crowd danced the night away.

The series ends with a sell-out appearance by DJ and top TV and film actor Idris Elba tonight, with Goodwood bosses again delighted by how the fifth year of the summer racing-and-music evenings have gone.

Our tips for tonight: 6.15 Banditry, 6.45 Shady Mccoy, 7.20 Overheard, 7.50 Echo Brava, 8.25 Enlace, 8.55 Reflation.

Racecourse MD Adam Waterworth said: “Friday was a fantastic night. The place was so busy – there was a buzz about the racecourse from the beginning of the evening to the very end.

“The rain was incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever seen rain like it in this country. We could have done eithout it but people seemed to get into the spirit of it. Once you’re wet, you’re wet!

“We were a little worried about how the ground beneath the dancefloor we put down would fare, but it was fine.”

Tomorrow’s star turn Elba is famed for numerous lead roles in TV and film, most notably Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and BBC’s Luther, but his talents don’t stop at acting.

In 2009, Elba released his first single Please Be True and later released a six-song EP to much critical acclaim. Since then he has performed at numerous events including seven week-long residencies in Ibiza, NBA All Star Parties in Las Vegas and legendary appearances at Pacha.

Tonight’s card features six races, the first at 6.15. The highlight is a class-three handicap, the William Grant & Sons Stakes at 7.50pm.
