Gosden runner heads market for Betfred Mile at Glorious Goodwood

Hat-trick seeking Trade Commissioner, who is 4/1 favourite with Betfred for the £100,0000 Betfred Mile, has been allotted 9st 5lb for the ultra-competitive heritage handicap, highlight of the fourth day of Glorious Goodwood on Friday, August 3.

John Gosden’s charge followed a facile success in a Salisbury handicap on June 27 with a cosy three-quarter length victory over Vainglory (16/1 & 8st 6lb) at Sandown on July 7.

Prince Of Johanne (10/1 & 9st 6lb) could bid to complete an unprecedented treble for trainer Tom Tate, having captured the Betfred Cambridgeshire at Newmarket and the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot.

Last year’s winner Boom And Bust (14/1) is set to carry 8st 13lb, while other notable contenders include Royal Hunt Cup runner-up Excellent Guest (14/1 & 8st 12lb), the progressive Ibtahaj (14/1 & 8st 3lb), Invisible Man (14/1 & 9st 7lb), Madam Macie (14/1 & 8st 10lb) and Johnny Castle (14/1 & 8st 10lb).

Webbow (8st 11lb), a 20/1 chance with Betfred, boasts an excellent record at Goodwood, having finished fourth in the Betfred Mile in 2009 and come home third in the same race in 2010.

The son of Dr Devious captured the Harwoods E B F “Hellvelyn” Classified Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last year and was runner-up in the Betfair Summer Double Second Leg Heritage Handicap at the same course in August.

He joined the stables of Julie Camacho at the start of the season and the Malton handler is hoping to get the evergreen 10-year-old back to his favourite course.

Camacho revealed: “Webbow is doing fine and he will hopefully head straight to the Betfred Mile, although he needs fast ground. He came to me in February and he looks in good form at the moment - he’s cantering and working away.

“He obviously loves racing around Goodwood and his form last season was probably as good as ever. You would hope that, if he returns in similar form, then he would be competitive.

“It would be a big ask for a 10-year-old to win a race like the Betfred Mile but we have been keeping him happy and, as long as the enthusiasm is still there, then he will continue racing.”

The weights are headed by the Queen’s Carlton House (10st 5lb), who was entered in error and is not expected to line up in the Betfred Mile.
