Hampden Park tennis finals throw up some thrillers

Hampden Park Tennis Club’s annual club championships took place a little later this year, with some incredible finals taking place, despite Covid making life different.

The men’s singles A final had weather-related challenges, yet there was some terrific play between top two seeds Colin Paterson and Lewis Emmerson.

Colin broke his opponent’s serve early and through his attacking play won the first set. Lewis fought back valiantly, and his consistent play led him to win the second set. But Colin battled to victory to win the men’s singles title 6-3, 4-6, 6-4

Colin, who is captain of the tennis club’s men’s first team, was also in the mixed doubles final and the men’s double A final.

In the mixed doubles final, he and club coach Jenny Hughes narrowly missed victory against Nicola Tuson and Jeremy Bennett. The match was close with Colin and Jenny taking a strong 5-1 lead in the first set before losing it 7-5. The result was 7-5, 7-5 to Nicola and Jeremy.

Joining Colin for the men’s doubles A final was Jeremy Bennett and the top-seeded pair fought hard against second seeds Stuart Hobden and Troy Moore.

Having broken serve early, Colin and Jeremy were broken back by Stuart and Troy, who won the first set with a flourish.

The top seeds levelled up before navigating their way through the final set to win 6-7, 6-4, 6-3

The men’s singles B final pitted Mark Powell against Joel Lock. The result was 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in Mark’s favour.

The final between men’s doubles B saw Shane Barrow and Grant Tarrant-Fisher against Mark Powell and Joel Lock. Shane and Grant won the title 6-4, 7-5

The men’s over 50s singles final between Jeremy Bennett and Simon Gent has not been played yet due to adverse weather conditions.

In the ladies’ competition, the singles final was determined by a round robin series of matches seeing a number of players pitting themselves against each other in an attempt to win the title.

It was eventually won overall by club newcomer Christiane McGregor.
