Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex golfers enjoy an open invite to Bognor

It was highly successful and there were favourable comments about the condition of the course, the organisation and the catering.

This was the 21st occasion on which the Bognor Centenary Plate has been contested.

Last year Chichester were the winners and their A team of Harry Harper, Mike Harrington, Norman Moore and Michael Snuggs retained the trophy in emphatic style with a score of 141.

Southwick Park B were second with 132 points, and third with 130 were Bletchingley A.

First in division one was Dennis Chalk (Royal Winchester) on 37 points on countback from Maurice Huggett (The Dyke) and, in third, Norman Kennard (Ifield) on 35.

In division two, first was David Abercrombie (East Brighton) with 37, second was John Whitcombe (The Dyke) on 36 on countback from Terry Lewis (Southwick Park).

First overall, winning the trophy, was Michael Snuggs (Chichester) with 40 points. Runner-up was Richard Lee (Bletchingly) on 39 and third Ron Adams (Ifield) on 37.

Eight Bognor members also took part, with Clive Millett recording the best score among them, 37.

There were 100 entrants for the annual RNLI Medal. Winner with an excellent nett score of 65 was Alan Simmonds, weeks after he won the Club Rubens Cup.

Ian Paine from division two was runner-up on 67. On 68 were division-one trio Mark Willmer, David Wood and Paul Archer. Peter Barker won division three with a nett 72.

A sum of £200 was raised for the RNLI.

A similar number took part in the Crouch Cup Stableford. Jim Catt, playing off ten, was the winner with an extremely good 43 points.

With 40 points Mark Carter was second on countback from Mick Martin - both were from division one.

Paul Elliott on 39 was fourth on countback from Chris Johnson (both div two) and sixth was Ray Twine (div three) on 39.

It has been a very busy successful period for the juniors at Bognor, in particular with victory in the prestigious Invitation Team Trophy at West Sussex Golf Club.

Eight teams took part and Bognor won with a team score of 106. Ham Manor were second with 102 and Walton Heath third with 101.

Jordan Vincent also won the individual prize, the Butler Salver, with 39 points - level par gross. The other members of the team were Jason Cullen with 35, Hayley Mackay on 34 and Tom Stoneham on 32.

The Sussex League away game against West Sussex was lost 3½-2½.

Scores: Tom Stoneham won 8&7, Hayley Mackay won 3&2, Jack Taylor halved, Jason Cullen lost 1 down, Scott Bingham lost 1 down, George Bingham lost 3&2.

At home in the Sussex League, Bognor beat Chichester 5½-½.

Scores: Tom Stoneham won 8&6, Taylor won 2&1, Marcus Embleton won 2&1, Ryan Breach won 3&2, Matt Wood won 3&2, Jake Stoneham halved.

Seventeen juniors, including three with handicaps over 28, took part in the annual Redfern Trophy Stableford sponsored by Richard Beresford and Derek Dady. The winner was Scott Bingham (handicap 18), with 42 points. Hayley Mackay, on 41, was runner-up and third was Matt Wood on 40. Mitchell Kane won the over-28s with 41. Nearest the pin on the fifth was Ryan Breach, on the tenth was Jack Taylor and the 16th in two shots was Ben Hughes.

AVISFORD PARK

The midweek Stableford was won by Harvey Burchell with 39 points. The club monthly medal was won in division one by Russell Evershed with a nett 66 and in division two by Steve Redfern, also with 66.

The senior Stableford was won in division one by Robert Boulter with 40 points and in division two by Malcolm Spiers with 42.

The club championship featured a field of 75. Winner of the scratch trophy was Danny Carter, with Brett Marchant coming second. In the handicap, Rob Kuszka won with Bob West runner-up.

It marked the end of Chris Wall’s reign as captain – Donald Every’s drive-in was the start of his. The next day, the ladies took part in their championship. Yvette Charman won and Rosemary Dabinett was second.

Then it was the turn of the seniors with Peter Redford winning the scratch trophy ahead of Peter Smith. Brian Coughlan won the handicap trophy. Second was Terry Smith.

CHICHESTER

Chichester Golf Academy and Westwood Golf are hosting Golf Olympics this Saturday and Sunday as part of a national initiative called Join In Local Sport.

The fun starts at 2pm each day and it’s open to families. Prizes will be up for grabs.
