Harriers out in force to honour Ted

Nearly 50 runners from the club turned out to honour Ted, who died at 63 after he collapsed taking part in a relay run at Herstmonceux in August 2003. He had served the club honorably as secretary, chairman and president, and reached the high level of a grade two timekeeper.

Ted’s daughter Linda Tullett, Harriers’ track and field coach, said: “It was a brilliant turnout of club members and dad would have been extremely proud. It was a truly fitting tribute to his hard work and passion for the club and great to see so many club members, old and new, getting their trainers on and joining in.”

Provisional results show Harriers had 42 seniors and five juniors taking part, as well as another 20 family and friends who also ran or turned out to cheer everyone on.

There were great performances in the junior 1 mile event as young Harrier Simeon Cousins won in 5.42. Sophie Hooper took 11th with 6.39 and Josh Essex clocked 7.53. There was also a fine performance from Sophie Holdstock.

In the 5-mile senior race, Tom Mullen took third place with 30:44, Richard Sutor was 18th in 33:41, Barry Tullett 26th with 34.13 and Phil Radford clocked 35.57.

There was a close bunch with 38.37 for Richard Stubbing, 38.42 Marguerite Lazell, despite picking up a nasty foot injury, and 38.35 for Ann Sinnett. They were followed by Louise Toomey 40.30, Michael Essex 41.26, Mark Sykes 42.09, Lucie Venables 42.25, Graham Kenard 45.43, John Morgan 45.45, John Rix 48.22, and current Harriers president John Gill 50.56 .

On Sunday, the Sussex Grand Prix series continued with the Heathfield Mid Summer Road Race. This 10k is hosted by the Heathfield Road Runners and saw another bumper entry and more great success for Harriers in what is a highly competitive event.

The Harriers men grabbed a superb second in the team competition, while Ann Sinnett was a terrific third lady with 44.13 and first female veteran, thus taking home an armful of prizes and trophies.

First Harrier in a fantastic fourth place was Phil Hardaway in 36.57.

In 12th was Steve Dalman 39.56, 19th Graham Hart 40.11, 21st Richard Sutor 41.14, and 27th Andrew Biggs 42.24.

In this strong field, Colin Light was just outside the top 100 with 50.09, while Mark Sykes clocked 51.18, Michelle Pearce 58.16, Peter Cobbett 59.21 and last but by no means least was Jenny Denyer, completing in 1.16.00.
