Harriers show progress in Road Relay Championships

There was a great Haywards Heath Harrier turnout for the Sussex County Athletic Association Road Relay Championships on Saturday.

In the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School, Horsham and amid some of Sussex’s best athletes, there were some outstanding individual Harrier performances and the rare chance to compete as a team in this format across the ages from under 13 to veteran.

Best placed Harrier team in fourth place in the V50 age group were Paul Cousins (11.26), Carl Bicknell (13.44) and Tim Hicks (12.54) with their combined time of 38.04 for this 3 x 2.1 mile course. Cousins’ time was the second fastest V50 time of the day.

The Senior Men’s A team were an impressive seventh amongst stiff competition in 66.42, two places higher than in 2014. There were some extremely fast times for this 6 leg race over the same distance, with Phil Radford​ clocking the fastest Harrier time of the day with a stunning 10.22​ anchor leg, ably set up by Tom Mullen ​10.58​, Paul Tomlinson ​11.03, James Collins​ 11.08​, Josh Pewter ​11.27​ and Rob Watts ​11.44​.

The Senior Men’s B team, in 71.39 were quicker than the A team two years ago, pointing to the strength and progress of the club.

Best placed ladies’ team were the U13 Girls who finished in eighth in 22.20 for the 3 x 1.1 mile course (Jasmine Mamoany​ 7.13, Isobel Russell ​7.22, Trinity Bird​ 7.45).

Track and Field meeting

The Haywards Heath Harriers’ evening Track and Field Meeting is at K2, Crawley on 30th April. The first event is at 6pm and includes races from age 9 upwards. Entry forms can be found on the club website www.haywardsheathharriers.co.uk.
