Hastings boss can see improvement

HASTINGS UNITED manager Steve Lovell insists his team are improving by the game despite their current barren run of form.

United haven't recorded a victory since their opening day defeat of Corby Town and last Saturday's 5-0 reverse at Bashley represented their heaviest setback to date.

But Lovell thinks they are on the verge on turning the corner and wants maximum points from the next three fixtures. He said: "We are improving every week. I'm going to be pushing for them to get nine points from the next three games. They are a great bunch of lads, they are good players and I think they can learn. If they don't I've got to perhaps look elsewhere. The lads are young and I can only do with what I've got. In a couple of weeks' time if I need to get a couple of experienced lads into the squad I will try and do it."

The Dr Martens League season is almost a month old and Lovell admits he's a lot clearer now about what to expect from his players and the division itself but won't be drawn into making any predictions about how the season may unfurl. He said: "I have learnt a lot about the players. They want to be at the football club and they want to play football. There's no team we've played where I thought 'they're a good side, they really murdered us'. They are getting used to the league and playing with each other. The spirit in the camp is brilliant."

United are without a fixture this Saturday (September 13) as a result of their premature FA Cup exit but Lovell hopes to use the time off productively to work on a few facets of their play.
