HASTINGS United maintained their encouraging start to the Ryman League Division One season with a competent 2-0 victory at Whyteleafe on Tuesday night.

Second half goals from Jon Wallis, a stunning lob from 30 yards, and Chris Honey sealed the points which kept them third in the table.

In truth, the two goal margin was the least Hastings, who possess the meanest defensive record in the division, merited in the wake of a dominant performance in all facets of the game.

Manager Steve Lovell said: "It was a very good performance. We worked very hard to wear them down and eventually got the goals."

United, whose challenge is viewed as "a cup final" by opposing teams according to Lovell, switch their thinking to the FA Cup on Saturday September 18 when Sussex Division Two club Mile Oak arrive for a first qualifying round tie. Any replay would take place on Wednesday at 7.15pm.
