HAT TRICK FOR MASTER MAXTED

CAMBER Sands windsurfer Steve Maxted won the National Veteran and Formula Windsurfing title for the third year running at the weekend at the final round of the United Kingdom Championships on the Isle of Wight.

The 59-year-old, who finished the series in 14th place overall, battled gale force winds to finish in 6th place in both the final of the slalom and the three course races.

Competing against competitors half his age, Maxted strained his back using a 8.1m sail in the three course races held on Friday, but still managed to compete and qualify for the slalom final the following day.

The Camber man progressed to the final after 2nd place finishes in both his heat and the semi-final, but he struggled to keep up with the leaders after the wind died down just when he needed it most. He still managed to maintain a respectable finish and was pleased with his performance.

The blustery conditions made for an eventful prize-giving presentation after the races, reducing the marquee to little more than a bog, but Maxted had better luck on the way home when he managed to catch one of the few ferries sailing from the island on Sunday afternoon.
