Haywards Heath Rollers are league champions

The Haywards Heath Rollers Short Mat Bowls team played their final league match of the season at the Dolphin Leisure Centre against Reigate Park SMBC.

The Rollers were top of the West Sussex County League (Division 2 North East) with just the this last match to play. Just two points behind the Rollers were Mannings Heath who also had their last game to play on Sunday.

The Saturday match was a very tense affair, on mat one Gilly Bannister’s team of Roy Langley and Ted & Suzanne Skelton had a very close game with neither team able to get more than two shots ahead throughout the first 19 ends, it was only in the last two ends that the Rollers managed to creep four shots ahead and win the game by 22 to 18 shots. On Mat two Paul Guest’s team of Rosemary Carter, Sue Paterson and Tony Bannister played well but were unable to overcome the much stronger competition of the Reigate team losing by 13 shots to Reigate’s 18. The result gave the Rollers two points giving them a total of 37 league points.

There was then a nail biting wait until Sunday evening for the result of the Mannings Heath / Southwater match as to who would win the league. In the end Southwater beat Mannings Heath on both mats and scored all six league points, leaving Mannings Heath with a total of 33 league points.

This result meant that Haywards Heath Rollers are the league champions and have been promoted to the First Division NE.
