H&B are preparing to make the step up to London Three South East following their promotion last term, a campaign in which they also finished runners-up in the Sussex Shield.

H&B are looking to learn and build on last season ahead of the new term, which will start in early September.

Head coach Kevin Smith said: “I learnt that we need patience. We’re in it for the long haul. We’ve got to have faith in our

squad and our coaches, even if there are times when you wonder if what you’re doing is right.”

The club has brought in professional fitness coach Andy Hitch on Tuesday nights to boost the pre-season training.

“We want to be competitive and stay in the division, but first and foremost I want the guys to enjoy their rugby,” continued Smith.

“That comes first. If we achieve that then great. We’re looking to recruit and strengthen the squad, but I’m happy with the team that got us up last year.

“It’s not just about the players as we need to make improvements to the coaching as well. We need to find new ways to conduct training sessions and keep it exciting for the players.”
