H&B give students a lesson

HASTINGS & Bexhill rugby club made it two out of two league wins, with a 29-19 win over University College Chichester at Polegrove on Saturday.

Chichester scored an early try against the run of play, but H&B were soon back in control with a penalty from Steve Kimber and three converted tries before half time. Pete Mahoney and Australian Warrick Benson put the ball down to give H&B a commanding 24-7 lead at the break.

The second half continued to be all H&B, but scoring was proving a problem, despite five attempts to push the scrum over the try-line.

Mahoney finally completed his hat-trick but the University side brought the scores closer and finished on a very flattering 29-19.

George Cullingford s hard work on the blind-side flank just edged him ahead of Mahooney s try scoring and Kimber s kicking for the man-of-the-match award. H&B have a much tougher game at Chichester Town tomorrow (Friday), but should have Seb Halligan, Paul Sandeman, Steve McManus and Rob Sparks back in the side.

*FOUR of the club s junior team have been on trial with Sussex. Tom Redman, Christian Hollingsworth, Alan Monkhouse and Jason Stratford all played for East Sussex against South Sussex under 14s at the trial.
