H&B need to play ‘out of their skins’

Hastings & Bexhill will have to play ‘out of their skins’ to win their opening game of 2015, according to head coach Kevin Smith.

H&B will host fellow London Three South East rugby club Heathfield & Waldron in round one of the Sussex Bob Rogers Cup tomorrow (Saturday). Kick-off at ARK William Parker Academy is 1.45pm.

Mid-table Heathfield are five places above H&B in the league and were 38-10 winners on their last visit to H&B in September.

Smith said: “For me they played pretty simplistic rugby, but did everything well and to be fair that’s exactly how we want to play. They’ve got no stars in that side, but what they have got is a unit that does the simple things very proficiently and they work hard for each other.

“They’re not a stellar side, but they’re a very competitive, organised side and they’ve come down from South East Two. They’re playing pretty standard, safe, disciplined rugby which will keep them in the middle of the league, and we’ve got to play out of our skins to beat them.”

Having had the Christmas period off, H&B were considering a short get-together today in preparation for the game. They expect to field a similar side to that beaten by Lewes last time out.
