H&B pile on the points

HASTINGS & Bexhill produced their best display of the Sussex rugby season with a 60-3 dismantling of Pulborough.

The crushing win was just as emphatic as the previous week's clash between the teams in the Powergen Junior Vase when H&B triumphed 63-7.

Assistant coach Rob Hamilton said: "It was very impressive from the start to the finish. We dominated from the word go and we were really focused. It was a better performance than at home (in the Vase) because it was quite obviously a different team, they were certainly a good few players stronger."

H&B certainly wouldn't have been relishing the prospect of visiting Pulborough's notoriously sloping pitch where they lost last year. But despite being greeted by a stiff, wintry breeze they knuckled down, rolled up their sleeves and efficiently got on with the job to win in fine style.

A powerful run across the line from a quick tap penalty by Paul Sandeman settled their nerves in the opening five minutes. He added the conversion and a penalty as the away side dominated despite playing uphill and into the wind.

Seb Halligan went over but Pulborough kicked a penalty with the last action of the opening 40 to only trail 15-3 at the break which failed to reflect H&B's control.

The visitors expected rather than made it happen after the re-start until Kit Claughton crossed for a pair of carbon copy scores both of which were embellished by Sandeman.

H&B simply ran riot in the final quarter adding further scores from Danny Ralph (2), Ben Campbell, David Northen and Tony Roche - three of which Sandeman converted.

H&B take on the Norfolk Arms in the league at William Parker on Saturday November 1st. Kick off 2.30pm.
