Highwoods reach national golf finals

HIGHWOODS Golf Club will be represented at the National UK finals of the Mail on Sunday Knockout Trophy in Manchester.

And a victory on October 4 could see the team go on to the National Finals to be held in Spain later in the year.

The Highwoods quartet of Roy Stephenson, Peter James, Vic Masserrella and Andy Ross prevailed in one of the most exciting finishes the competition has seen for years.

The team were drawn away from home in the seventh round of the matchplay at East Berkshire Golf Club in Crowthorne on Sunday. Highwoods had previously beaten Royal Eastbourne (away), Cooden Beach (home), Lamberhurst (away), Hawkhurst (home), Cuddington (home) and Cherry Lodge (home).

East Berkshire were favourites to progress having won all of their last six matches without too much trouble, but they hadn't reckoned on the four low handicappers from Highwoods.

Every match went to the last hole with both Stephenson and James producing excellent shots into the green to win the hole and halve their respective games. James conjured up a stunning shot from out of the trees, running it over a road, around a bunker and to within 2ft of the hole for a birdie.

Masserrella won the last two holes of his contest to win one up which eased the pressure to some extent on Ross in the anchor role. Ross was down for almost his entire match against Dave Kelly - the four handicap club secretary - until the 18th when in front of 50 or so home supporters he produced a solid par four for victory, again by one hole.

East Berkshire was magnanimous in their support of Highwoods and proved excellent hosts in the post match celebrations.
