Hills went into the final race weekend full of confidence, having secured four podium finishes in his previous four races.

Any hopes of a title tilt were dashed for the Worthing racer after he missed the first race meet but a top five place in the final standings was well in sight.

In his first heat, Hills drew a back grid row placing as he was up against all of the championship contenders.

He uncharacteristically struggled for pace but still managed to clinch a sixth place finish.

In the second set of heats, Hills moved up a row and this time clinched fourth place.

The Worthing racer went into the final heat full of confidence and a fine race saw him come out on top and secure a top grid starting place for the A-Final.

However, after a great start in the race, a collision forced him to retire and brought a premature end to his final weekend.

Hills still ended with a fifth provisional placing.

He said: “The weekend was really hard with big grids at a track where overtaking is difficult. I really had to make the most of the starts and I did that well in the heats.

“The season has had great highs and a few lows but overall I have to be really pleased with myself.

“If someone had said to me at the beginning of the year that I would have two wins and four podiums then I would have been over the moon.
